A message and essay from Sheila Laqui, Stanford '05

Hello PASU,

It was really great seeing many of you this weekend. I appreciated and enjoyed the opportunity to catch up a little bit, reminisce, and see what the organization is up to (like PASU Ski Trip!!). It's wonderful to see how you've grown, both as a group and as individuals.

Seeing the underclassmen at Kayumanggi practice today was a moment of realization. It brought me back to concens that some of your predecessors had about PASU's institutional memory, prior to our graduating. In 2003, Coco and I wrote a paper about the history and the future of PASU for a class taught by Prof. Dawn Mabalon. The primary purpose of the paper was to research and document PASU's history, creating a vehicle by which to pass on PASU's institutional memory. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, I don't think either Coco or I shared our paper outside of Prof. Mabalon's class.

So I'm sharing it with you now. I'll admit it's somewhat long, but it's packed with heart, underscoring the importance of PASU--on a personal level for us, and as a voice for the local and the larger Filipino community. So I urge you to give it a look and maybe even continue using it for the purpose we originally intended: to pass on PASU's history and vision.

I should preface your reading of it by saying that the opinions stated are the sincere reflections of its writers. The driving force behind writing about PASU and eventually sharing our paper was love for you guys and our community. Most of you will be graduating this year, and it is my genuine hope that you will always find support, a home and a family in PASU, even with succeeding generations.

All the Best,
Sheila
